Ixworth Explorer Scout Unit

Discovery E.S.U.”, as our Explorer Scout Unit is known was formed in September 2012 and consists of male and female young people and leaders.

Ixworth Explorer ScoutsDiscovery offers its members the chance to attend multiple specialist camps each year including, kayaking, mountain biking, climbing and hillwalking as well as other camps such as the County Moot every 4 years, our own unit camps and the firm favourite with the Explorer’s, Gillwell24, an annual 24 hour activities camp where the young people do a massive range of fun activities, within the safety of Gillwell Campsite, for 24 hours – right on through the night.

Generally we meet every Friday and, as part of belonging to the Unit, members of Discovery are encouraged to agree their own programme of activities for each term. During the past 3 years we have (obviously); hiked, climbed, kayaked, cycled, camped, built fires and cooked, learned survival techniques, but also; used power-kites and rode in tandem buggies pulled by them, sailed, visited a radio station, zombie paintballed, gone ape at Go-Ape, won prizes in LiveWell Suffolk’s film competition (2 years running), geocached, built penny-stoves from drinks cans, paddled-boarded, enjoyed nights in with Scalextrick, multiple Wii machines projected onto screens, quiz nights (including ‘The Cube’ and ‘Pointless’), emergency aid training and much, much more. Next year some of us will be taking part in a District canoe expedition in Ardeche.

We are very proud of our team of youngsters that completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award last year. This year we have more starting their Bronze award and also have a team starting their Silver and they plan on achieving their Expedition in 2 man open canoes. We will make sure this happens.

Discovery are always open to receiving new members whether they have previously been involved in Scouting or not. Scouting is always open to everybody and the Scouting Association prides itself on its diversity. We meet weekly, usually on Fridays, between 7pm and 9:30pm. We have 4 Leaders and a unit helper and currently 12 Explorers. If you want to come and try us out for a couple of weeks before committing to join, do just that. Give Gav a ring on 01359 232901 to get things started.
